“Speaking at universities gives me a great opportunity to have an intelligent conversation with students, share my experiences, and let them draw their own conclusions,” says drake. “I’ve always approached my public appearances as an opportunity to learn and gain knowledge, as well as share my own experiences. Growing together as a community is how we are all able to succeed – and I’m looking forward to seeing what sexual discourse Dr. Penley’s class and I can create together.”

“jessica drake is a wickedly compelling and articulate sex educator, who is also smart, funny, and compassionate,” states Dr. Penley. “I am delighted that jessica drake is willing to take time out of her busy schedule to speak to my students about her work as a producer, sex educator, and humanitarian. We are grateful for her generosity.”

Dr. Penley’s major areas of research interest are film history and theory, feminist theory, cultural studies, contemporary art, and science and technology studies. She has penned several volumes on film, sex, pornography and feminism, and is the co-editor of The Feminist Porn Book: The Politics of Producing Pleasure, with Tristan Taormino, Mireille Miller-Young, and Celine Parreñas Shimizu. According to the UCSB Film and Media Studies course description, “[‘Topics in Film and Popular Culture: Pornography’] approaches pornography as a major instance of film and popular culture, from the pre-history and history of cinema and video to the Internet and virtual worlds. Course content [is] augmented by guest lectures from the adult industry and academia.”

Recently, drake was a guest lecturer at Pasadena City College for Dr. Hugo Schwyzer’s “Navigating Pornography” class; she also spoke at Chapman University with the “Psychology 340: Human Sexuality” class taught by Assistant Professor David Frederick for the Crean School of Health and Life Sciences. She is also a noted expert in USA Today’s November 2012 Sexual Health and Wellness supplement.

“jessica drake was an exceptional speaker. She not only shared her views on the pornography industry, but more broadly spoke to students about sexual health,” Dr. Frederick said. “She communicated to students ways of learning to become comfortable with one’s own body and learning how to communicate their desires to their partners. She emphasized the importance of understanding and respecting one’s own limits when it comes to sex, and accepting that different people have very different preferences. jessica was a true pleasure to have in class, and the students learned a great deal from her presentation. I would highly recommend her as a speaker for any class related to media issues, gender, or sexuality.”

Dr. Schwyzer echoed Dr. Frederick’s sentiment, adding, “jessica isn’t just an industry superstar, she’s a veteran activist and an articulate and important advocate for pleasure, for common sense, and an end to sexual shame. On screen and off, she’s an incandescent personality and, I have to believe, a tremendous role model for my students. I’m so glad they had an opportunity to hear from her.”

Sex Educator jessica drake to Address Students at Pasadena City College

Despite Administrative Controversy, PCC’s ‘Navigating Pornography’ Class Continues with Guest Lectures!

MARCH 13, 2013 — PASADENA, Calif – On March 20, sexual wellness authority and sex educator jessica drake will lecture at Pasadena City College as part of Dr. Hugo Schwyzer’s “Navigating Pornography” class. This follows the recent appearance by crossover star James Deen at the same class, which attracted attention nationwide.

“I’m so excited to welcome jessica drake to Pasadena City College. Jessica isn’t just an industry superstar, she’s a veteran activist and an articulate and important advocate for pleasure, for common sense, and an end to sexual shame,” Dr. Schwyzer said. “On screen and off, she’s an incandescent personality and, I have to believe, a tremendous role model for my students. I’m so glad that they’ll have an opportunity to hear from her.”

Deen’s appearance caused an uproar on and off campus, as Pasadena City College restricted admittance to the class to enrolled students and invited press only and the debate as to the suitability of a college seminar inviting a porn star — even to a class titled “Navigating Pornography” — filled newspapers and airwaves nationwide.

Recently, drake was a guest lecturer at Chapman University at the Psychology 340: Human Sexuality class taught by Assistant Professor David Frederick for the Crean School of Health and Life Sciences. drake addressed the class’ 36 undergraduate students.

“jessica was a true pleasure to have in class, and the students learned a great deal from her presentation. I would highly recommend her as a speaker for any class related to media issues, gender, or sexuality.”

To read jessica drake’s recap of her visit to Chapman University, visit http://www.guidetowickedsex.com/2013/03/08/a-recap-of-my-appearance-at-chapman-university/.

To help advance her sex education agenda, drake writes, produces, and directs the video series “jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex,” which has received positive reviews from adult industry authorities including XBIZ, AVN and Fleshbot.com. The production “jessica drake’s Guide Wicked Sex: Anal” received the 2012 XBIZ award for Specialty Release of the Year and “jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex: Fellatio” received the AVN Award for Best Educational Release in 2012.

“‘Guide to Wicked Sex’ resulted from my appearances at adult stores,” drake said. “As more women came to meet me, they became more comfortable with asking questions about sex and sexuality. I realized there was a real interest in straightforward information about sex. Speaking at universities gives me a great opportunity to have an intelligent conversation with students, share my experiences, and let them draw their own conclusions.”

The “Navigating Pornography” course is part of Dr. Schwyzer’s academic interest in history and gender studies. He has taught at Pasadena City College since 1993, in courses that have dealt with women’s history, men and masculinity, and gay and lesbian history. In the late 1990s, he developed the college’s first interdisciplinary course focusing on “Beauty and the Body,” which is still offered at the college and focuses on the historical roots of contemporary eating disorders and distorted body image.

Scheduled for March 20 at 1:30 pm, jessica drake’s lecture at Dr. Schwyzer’s Navigating Pornography course is open to enrolled students and invited media only.

drake will also appear at sexuality conference CatalystCon East, March 15-17 in Arlington, Virginia where she will host sessions on Measure B and slut shaming, as well as speak at the Opening Keynote Plenary Address. For more information, visit www.CatalystCon.com.

jessica drake Discusses Measure B on CNN

Wicked Pictures Contract Star & Sex Educator Answers Questions Regarding the Passage of the ‘Condoms-in-Porn Law’

NOVEMBER 15, 2012 — HOLLYWOOD, CA — Sexual wellness authority and Wicked Pictures contract star jessica drake was part of an interview discussing L.A. County’s controversial Measure B, also known as the Condoms-in-Porn Law, on CNN Saturday morning as part of the “CNN Newsroom” program. The CNN Newsroom interview aired Saturday, November 10 at 10:15 am EST. CNN anchor Randi Kaye interviewed drake, as well as male performer James Deen.

The complete interview is on the CNN website here: http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2012/11/10/exp-measure-b.cnn

“From the performer’s standpoint, and the standpoint of a woman, I don’t like the idea of being told what I have to do with my body,” drake said on CNN. “We are tested every 14 to 28 days as performers. We are tested for HIV, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and I have been very comfortable with the testing protocols that we have had in effect.”

drake and Deen also described the misleading nature of Measure B. “On the ballot, it said ‘condom use,’ but then, later on, it says they can enforce the blood-borne pathogens law,” drake explained in the interview.

“It was a pleasure to represent our industry and Wicked Pictures to millions of CNN viewers who only see us performing, or don’t know us at all,” drake said. “We spent more than a decade developing a testing system to help keep our industry safe, and Measure B is a threat to our livelihood.”

Before the election, Deen and drake appeared in a No-on-B ad, which is available on the news-and-information website The Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/19/porn-stars-jessica-drake-_n_1980663.html.

Since 2004, drake has been a contract performer for Wicked Pictures, an adult-video company requiring condoms in intercourse scenes for more than 14 years. Although Wicked Pictures’ in-house policy requires condom use, the company joined most of the adult industry in opposing Measure B, which mandates emergency-room medical protocols for all sex scenes shot in Los Angeles County.

A fervent educator on sexual health and wellness, jessica drake writes, produces, and directs the video series “jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex.” The series has received excellent reviews from adult industry authorities including XBIZ, AVN and Fleshbot.com. The production “jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex: Fellatio” received the 2012 AVN award for Best Educational Release and “jessica drake’s Guide Wicked Sex: Anal’ received the 2012 XBIZ award for Specialty Release of the Year.

As an advocate for safe sex practices and education, drake spearheads Wicked Pictures’ involvement in Adult Production Health & Safety Services, a program designed by the Free Speech Coalition to provide producers and performers with a reliable protocol and database for STI testing.

Continuing her commitment to sexuality education, drake writes a column for AdultDVDEmpire.com titled Ask jessica drake Anything,” where she answers questions on love, sex, and romance each month.

“We lost the first battle on Measure B, but the discussion goes on,” drake said. “We are opposed to shooting scenes in protective gear, and we will continue the fight.”

About AIDS Walk Los Angeles:

The world’s first AIDS Walk was developed by Craig R. Miller in 1984, during the height of the AIDS epidemic. Seeing the need for immediate action in response to this public-health emergency, Miller sought to fill the void left by the government’s negligible response to the crisis. Drawing on his experience as a political and community organizer, Miller’s approach combined grassroots activism with fundraising and other campaign strategies to raise both awareness and urgently needed funds for the fight against AIDS. Miller brought his idea to the fledgling AIDS service organization, AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA), who hired the young activist to produce this new event. Miller and APLA expected to draw a crowd of 1,000 supporters and raise $100,000 for this very first AIDS Walk. On July 28, 1985 in Los Angeles, 4,500 courageous and visionary people assembled at Paramount Studios and raised an astonishing $673,000. Since 1985, AIDS Walk Los Angeles has drawn over a half-million participants who have collectively raised more than $72 million for APLA. The event serves as a model of grassroots fundraising and community activism for organizations across the United States. For more information, visit http://www.aidswalk.net/.

About CatalystCon:

CatalystCon is a conference created to inspire exceptional conversations about sexuality. It is about reaching out and stimulating those who attend to create those important conversations in their own communities, changing how we as a society talk and treat sexuality.  It is about stimulating the activist that is within all of us and sparking transformation in the way our friends, neighbors, children and even politicians discuss one of the most important aspects of humanity. Dee Dennis regards this conference as a “melting pot of sexuality” that will unite sex educators, sexologists, sex workers, writers, activists, and anyone with a passion for creating change. “Knowledge is power, and sharing that knowledge is the first spark in igniting change.” This is the fundamental principle behind CatalystCon.
