Speaking to Prof. Constance Penley’s UCSB Students

Monday I had the honor of speaking at the University of California at Santa Barbara to a class taught by Professor of Film and Media Studies, Constance Penley. Although I’ve found myself speaking at many universities lately, each experience has been completely different, and this one was exceptionally unique.

The lecture took place in the Pollack Theater, a truly gorgeous venue, boasting the biggest screen I’ve even seen anything I’ve directed on. And speaking of the screen, before I was escorted onto the stage, the first few minutes of my latest starring role, $EX  was shown. As I took my seat onstage and began to introduce myself and talk a bit abut my background and history, I was excited to see everyone paying very close attention – some even taking notes that will come into play later during my time with them.

I did go through the usual introductory information, and after that, I focused on explaining how my series came about. I was describing my formula for writing, casting, and shooting, then we screened Guide to Wicked Sex – Anal Play for Men. As the lights dimmed, I turned sideways to be able to see the screen, but I made sure I was still able to see the student’s reactions as well. On screen they saw my narration, then the amazing interviews my performers gave me, and after that, they saw some demonstrations. Suddenly, in the near dark, on the HUGE theater screen we were treated to all kinds of male anal play – blow jobs with anal exploration, rimming, handjobs, and more. Even as a seasoned professional, I was totally enthralled. I’ve never seen anything I’ve directed on a screen that big, and I’ve never shared it with such a large live audience. Due to time constraints, we stopped short of anal play with toys and strap ons, and when the lights came on, everyone looked as captivated as I felt. Every time I’ve watched porn in a large group, my experience has varied, but I’d never found the sheer curiosity and attention level as I found in Professor Penley’s class.

We concluded our time together with one of the best Q and A sessions ever. This is where the notes they were taking earlier came into play. The questions were insightful, intuitive, and really original. After the questions, I went into the lobby of the theater for awhile to meet the students personally and gift them with copies of the series and also my newest feature movie, $EX. I also answered questions privately, on a one on one basis, and then it was time to leave.

As I drove home and replayed the afternoon in my head, I thought once again about how truly grateful I am – for opportunities like this, for people like Constance, and especially for my awesome performers and crew who work so hard for me and always give me their very best. Hopefully a few of them are reading this right now – and to them and all of you – I say thanks.

Speaking at CatalystCon East in Washington D.C.

I’m excited to say CatalystCon East is only 5 weeks away!

Back in September 2012, I was on a panel for Catalyst Con West (www.CatalystCon.com), a conference devoted to “inspiring exceptional conversations about sexuality.”  As I wrote about here, I had an amazing time meeting and speaking with many of my idols in the field of sexuality.  The conference helped me grow as an educator and a woman.

I’m pleased to announce I will be participating in the inaugural CatalystCon East in the Washington D.C. area, March 15-17.  I am extremely honored to participate as a panel member for the Opening Keynote Plenary Address: Sparking Communication in Sexuality, Activism, and Acceptance.  I will also present at sessions titled The Facts About Measure B, and How It Impacts Us All and Slut Shaming in Sex Positive Communities.

As we get closer to the conference, I’ll write posts about the various sessions I’m speaking at and let you know what sessions I’m most eager to attend.  If you live anywhere near Washington D.C. or are able to travel, I urge you to look into attending CatalystCon East.

Speaking at CatalystCon

I sat in my chair listening to the introductions, one by one: Carol Queen. Dr. Robert Lawrence. Ava Mir-Ausziehen, Sex Nerd Sandra Daugherty. They are some very prolific names in the field of Sex Education – authors, doctors, pioneers…and me.

I was introduced by Carol Queen, no less, as a Sex Educator on a panel entitled “Sex Education: Out of the Classroom, Into the Streets.”

This weekend I had the privilege of attending CatalystCon (www.CatalystCon.com), a sex-positive conference in Long Beach. An event created and organized by Dee Dennis, of deedennis.com, it is described as a “safe, non-judgmental space where we can all come together and expand both our knowledge and understanding of the issues that influence sexuality today,” but for me, it was so much more.

The first night of the conference opened with a very unique “Social Lubrication” hosted by Reid Mihalko that had everyone up out of their seats, running around the room spouting random sex facts to total strangers. That gave way to “Sex Rules” with Maria Falzone, who warmed us up with her hysterical humor, only to leave us deep in thought with a very powerful message. The evening culminated with the Opening Keynote Plenary featuring Dr. Marty Klein (who was kind enough not to notice me trembling as I shook his hand), Megan Andelloux, Maggie Mayhem, and Francisco Ramirez. They spoke on Sparking Communication in Sexuality, Activism, and Acceptance, and by the time they were done, everyone in the room was radiating their excitement.

In just three short days, I met some amazing people from many different walks of Sex Ed. People whose books I have read, names I have heard, and classes I have attended. People I had only dreamed of meeting were all under one roof! Not only did I get to speak on a panel, I also got to sit in on as many as I could, and I really wish I could have cloned myself to attend a few more.

I attended “Media Risks: Who Wins?”, Feminist Perspectives on “50 Shades of Grey,” “Teaching Porn, How to be an Ally to Sex Workers,” “A New Monogamy,” “Fat Sex Works,” “Women in the Industry,” and “A Conversation with Anti-Establishment Sex Workers.” My brain was tingling with all of this stimulation. It was three straight days of BRAIN SEX.

On Saturday night, we were also treated to the premiere of a documentary called “How to Lose Your Virginity” by Therese Shechter followed by either Dirty Bingo or Bawdy Storytelling. I chose the latter, and was treated to a host of ridiculously entertaining stories by some of the speakers, and though it was very close, I dare say that Megan Andelloux took the cake with her “Pennies” story. I would give you the juicy details, but my words would never suffice. Couple that with the fact I laughed so hard I almost fell out of my chair, and it would be tough for you to get the full effect. Trust me, it was brilliant.

Speaking on my panel was amazing. To have people listening to me, valuing what i had to say – both because AND despite who I am, was a great experience for me as a Sex Educator. Perhaps I’ll expand on that in another blog, but for now I am simply grateful to have had the experience of CatalystCon, and would love to thank all of the attendees, Wicked Pictures, Wicked Sensual, Adella from Fine Ass Marketing, and most of all, Dee Dennis. I can’t wait for CatalystCon East.
